Dee Atchison book-signing
Saturday 27 August 2011 - 11am

Dee Aitchison joined us to sign and chat about her debut novel "Honesty MP". Published by GET Publishing of Bridgnorth, it tells the story of a Holstein dairy cow named Honesty, which is put forward by a Young Farmers Club as a parliamentary candidate, and to everyone’s surprise is duly elected to the House of Commons...

"At the core of the book lies a disenchantment with the current political system, and a breakdown in trust between the rural electorate and those who claim to represent their interests in Westminster. It outlines the corruption that tarnishes politics, the media manipulation that misdirects public belief, and a civil service in denial of all fault. These are powerful subjects yet are handled with an extremely light touch that will suit the general reader..."

Mavis Nicholson book-signing
Saturday 04 June 2011 - 11am
Mavis NicholsonIt was a joint-signing this time, with one local (and national) celebrity, and a first novel by an Oswestry author that's really making waves.
Many of you will already know Mavis Nicholson, who has presented numerous programmes on TV, including her own eponymous chat-show "Mavis On 4" (her interviews with Elizabeth Taylor and David Bowie, among others, can be seen on You Tube).
The book Mavis (above) signed was "What Did You Do In The War, Mummy", an engaging and sometimes moving memoir of women's lives and experiences during World War II.
George Miller's novel "The Buzzards of Zinn", which is on the shortlist for the People's Book Prize for Spring 2011, is a "realist-fantasy" novel that has been eliciting some very enthusiastic comments. This is no mere flight of fancy: the story is also a thought-provoking allegory with a strong political dimension, which has been compared to Orwell and Swift.

The book is very attractively produced by Ellingham Press of Much Wenlock (where it has been selling like hot cakes), and at 284 pages the exciting tale should provide many hours of historic entertainment.

James Atkins book-signing
Saturday 05 February 2011 - 11am

Local author James Atkins signed copies of his newly-published "Climate Change for Football Fans: A matter of life and death".

James Atkins says:
"This book is about climate change policy, one of the most boring topics in the world. So it also includes stuff about football, which is one of the most interesting subjects in the world. It's written as a series of conversations between Joe, a football-mad Burnley FC fan, and Professor Igor who's obsessed with climate change. Joe thinks worrying about climate change is a waste of time, and Igor can't understand why 22 grown men would put on shorts and run around after a ball."

It's funny, written in the earthy and irreverent language of the football fan. But it also packs a serious punch with its clear sub-text about the reality of climate change.

Alison Hartfield book-signing
Saturday 08 January 2011 - 11am

Alison Hartfield signed copies of her book "A Mile for the Milk". Set in the nineteen twenties, it traces the impact of a rural upbringing and now vanished way of life upon the author and her sisters. The values instilled, the country school, the village, the times and the seasons, all combine to provide a "childhood of unimaginable richness". The author's memories of those fleeting years are beautifully illustrated by Judith Wall's line drawings. The book will appeal to all those who share the author's love of the countryside.

All royalties arising from the sale of this book will be donated to Christian Aid.

Cordelia Weedon book-signing
Saturday 11 December 2010 - 11am

Cordelia Weedon signed copies of "Intimations", her recent book of poems and photographs. The poems were written by Cordelia's mother, Veronica More, a writer who lives in rural Mallorca. They draw on her life experiences and reflect upon our transitory presence on earth. Cordelia was inspired to illustrate the poems with black and white images that draw out particular elements of the delicacy of vision in her mother's work.

John Hainsworth book-signing
Saturday 06 November 2010 - 11am

John Hainsworth signed copies of his excellent novel "A Corruptible Crown". Set amid the lovely scenery of Mid-Wales at the present day, this thoroughly enjoyable yarn skillfully combines elements of murder-mystery, love-story, epic quest, and a pleasing line in farce which can't fail to entertain. It's also a must for all who are interested in mining and pot-holing, as several of its scenes actually take place underground.
